When several of these stressors overlap, they can contribute to a higher cumulative physiological stress load over time.
Addressing chronic stress therefore has to go beyond supplementation. A dog's biological and behavioural needs need to be met first: adequate sleep, predictable routines, appropriate physical activity, opportunities to sniff and decompress, social safety, and an environment in which the dog can regularly relax. Pain, digestive issues and other underlying health problems can also contribute to chronic stress and need to be addressed, while dogs struggling with anxiety, fear or reactivity may also need appropriate behavioural support.

Which Medicinal Mushrooms Are Most Relevant to Stress Resilience?
The word “adaptogen” is used fairly loosely in wellness marketing, but not all medicinal mushrooms are classical adaptogens. Turkey tail, for example, is one of the most widely researched medicinal mushrooms for immune and cancer support in dogs, but its primary role is immunomodulatory rather than adaptogenic. Lion's Mane and Chaga bring other properties that can also contribute to stress resilience, although they are less straightforward classical adaptogens.

Reishi is one of the most firmly established adaptogenic mushrooms. Its lanostane-type triterpenes, including ganoderic acids, and its polysaccharides have been studied for their effects on neuroendocrine signalling, immune regulation, inflammation and the nervous system. These overlapping actions are what make reishi particularly relevant as an adaptogen: rather than acting through one isolated pathway, it supports several of the regulatory systems involved in how a body responds to ongoing stress.
Reishi's value is also broader than stress regulation alone. Chronic stress and immune function are closely interconnected, which makes its immunomodulatory activity particularly relevant. In a 2024 canine study, Reishi supplementation influenced immune-related outcomes in healthy adult dogs, including a greater vaccine-specific IgG response at the highest dose studied. Its triterpenes have also demonstrated histamine-release inhibitory activity in experimental mast-cell research. This combination of adaptogenic, immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory activity is one reason Reishi is particularly useful when chronic stress exists alongside chronic skin conditions like allergies or immune dysregulation.

Its bioactive compounds, particularly cordycepin and adenosine-related compounds, have been studied for their effects on cellular energy metabolism, mitochondrial function, oxidative stress and the physiological response to exertion. This makes its adaptogenic profile distinct from Reishi, with a stronger emphasis on physical performance, recovery and energy regulation.
This makes Cordyceps particularly relevant for working and sporting dogs with high physical demands, older dogs experiencing reduced stamina or vitality, and dogs recovering from periods of illness or physical stress. Its role in supporting energy metabolism and physiological resilience also complements the broader stress-regulating actions associated with adaptogenic mushrooms.
3) Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus)
Lion’s Mane stands apart from the other mushrooms in this group because its strongest activity is neurological. It is better known as a nootropic and neuroprotective mushroom than as a classical adaptogen. Its bioactive compounds include hericenones and erinacines, which have been studied for their effects on neurotrophic pathways involving nerve growth factor (NGF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). These pathways are important for neuronal survival, plasticity and repair.

Mushroom species, the part used, growing medium and extraction method all affect the concentration and availability of its bioactive compounds. Verified beta-glucan content is also more useful than a generic “polysaccharide” percentage, which can include starch and other carbohydrates rather than mushroom-derived beta-glucans.
Quality matters for safety too. Medicinal mushrooms can accumulate contaminants from their growing environment, making careful sourcing and appropriate testing particularly important.
